We got back to our place and our wonderful helpers brought all the food and drinks down to the backyard, which my family had helped the week before to transform an overgrown jungle into a beautifully landscaped garden! Neighbors had loaned us some lawn chairs and tables, and we had borrowed some picnic tables and a pavilion from the church.
The guests mingled in the garden a bit, and then Tobias made a little thank- you toast to our guests and declared the buffet open. A friend of ours played the accordion for us for an hour or two during the reception, providing lovely (and lively!) background music. We did the “catering” all by ourselves (though with the help of family and friends) and had hors d’oeuvres, fresh veggies, potato salad, Schwäbische Maultaschen (Swabian ravioli soup- 160 Maultaschen made by Tante Hannah!) and tomato/basil/mozzarella skewers. Over the course of the afternoon, people came and went, and we ended up hanging out in the garden until midnight. We lit a fire in our garden fireplace and snuggled up with blankets to stay warm on the chilly summer evening.
